Hi, I’m Amber Kay!

 

I’m a romantasy author, lifelong book lover, and someone who has always believed there is a little bit of magic hiding inside a good story. I write fantasy romance filled with ancient magic, dangerous secrets, complicated characters, found family, devastating choices, and romances that take their time earning your heart. I love building worlds that feel like somewhere you could actually step into, complete with kingdoms worth fighting for, magic with consequences, characters who make questionable decisions, and love stories that hurt just enough before they finally give you what you’ve been waiting for. Basically, if there’s a kingdom in danger, a secret nobody should know, two people with way too much emotional tension, and a fictional character I can become completely obsessed with, I’m probably having a great time.

My relationship with books started long before I became an author.

Some of my earliest memories involve libraries and the excitement of walking into a place filled with stories waiting to be discovered. Growing up, the library was more than somewhere to check out books. It was a place where I could explore different worlds, learn something new, and find stories that stayed with me long after I finished reading them. That love eventually became one of the reasons I decided I wanted to work in libraries myself. Now, I get to combine two things I love: writing stories and helping people discover them.

I’m currently attending The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC Greensboro), where I’m pursuing my Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) with a concentration in School Librarianship. My goal is to become a school librarian and create the kind of welcoming, encouraging library environment that helps students discover books they love and realize that there is a story out there for them. Being an author has made me appreciate even more how important access to stories can be. Books can give us somewhere to escape, someone to relate to, a question we had never thought to ask, or simply a few hours where the rest of the world disappears. I want to help give that experience to the next generation of readers. And yes, I fully intend to be the school librarian who gets way too excited about recommending a book.

Writing has always been a part of me, but becoming a published author turned that love of storytelling into something much bigger. I write under the pen name Amber Kay, where I get to build the worlds that have been living in my head and finally share them with readers. My current romantasy projects include my Aetherborn trilogy, beginning with Heir of Wind & Ash. I love writing stories where magic is never just decoration. It changes people, creates consequences, shapes kingdoms, and forces characters to make choices they never expected to face. And, of course, there is always romance. I’m especially drawn to slow-burn relationships, complicated feelings, emotional tension, found family, loyalty, and characters who have to learn that loving someone can be just as terrifying as fighting for them. Writing romantasy gives me the perfect excuse to combine all of those things into one very chaotic place.
